DESCRIPTION
|
• The starter does not work.
|
|
POSSIBLE CAUSE
|
• Open circuit between the engine switch and the starter
• Starter malfunction
• Seized/hydrolocked engine, flywheel
• Immobilizer system and/or circuit malfunction (Vehicles with immobilizer system)
• Immobilizer system is operating properly (Engine key is not programmed.) (Vehicles with immobilizer system)
• Low or dead battery
• Charging system malfunction

Connect the M-MDS to the DLC-2.
Do the following conditions appear?
• Engine does not crank.
• DTC P1260 is displayed.

Both conditions appear:
Go to Step 4.

Either or other condition appears:
Go to the next step.

Is the coil connector securely connected to the coil?
|
Yes
|
Go to the next step.
|
|
No
|
Connect the coil connector securely.
Return to Step 1.

Does the security light illuminate?
|
Yes
|
Go to the next step.
|

No
|
Inspect the instrument cluster.
|
||
|
4
|
Connect the M-MDS to the DLC-2 and retrieve the DTC.

B1213, B2139,B2141, B1600, B1601, B1602, B1681, B2103, B2431, U2510

Yes

Go to the appropriate DTC test.
|

No
|
Go to the next step.

Inspect the following wiring harnesses and connectors:
• Between coil terminal A and instrument cluster terminal 2Q
• Between coil terminal B and instrument cluster terminal 2S
Are there any malfunction?

Yes
|
Repair or replace suspected wiring harness and connector.
|

No
|
Go to the next step.
|

Inspect the following wiring harnesses and connectors:
• Between PCM terminal 309 and instrument cluster terminal 1I
• Between PCM terminal 301 and instrument cluster terminal 1K
Are there any malfunction?

Yes
|
Repair or replace suspected wiring harness and connector.
|
|
No
|
Go to the next step.

Is there continuity between PCM terminal 108 and the starter relay?
|
Yes
|
Go to the next step.
|
|
No
|
Repair replace wiring harness.
|
||
|

Inspect the following:
• Battery connection
• Battery condition
• Fuses
Are all items normal?

Yes
|
Go to the next step.
|
|
No
|
Service if necessary.
Repeat Step 8.

Is a clicking sound heard from the starter when the engine switch is turned to the START position?

Yes
|
Go to Step 11.
|

No
|
Go to the next step.

Inspect starting system
Is the starting system normal?
|
Yes
|
Inspect for a seized/hydrolocked engine and flywheel.
|
|
No
|
Repair or replace components as required.
|

Do any other electrical accessories operate?
|
Yes
|
Go to the next step.
|
|
No
|
Inspect the charging system.
|
||
|

|
Connect M-MDS to the DLC-2.
Turn the engine switch to the ON position.
Retrieve any DTC.
Are DTCs displayed?

Yes
|
DTC is displayed:
Go to appropriate DTC test.
Communication error message is displayed:
Inspect for the following:
• Open circuit between the PCM control relay and PCM terminal 236 or 231
• Open circuit between PCM control relay and PCM terminal 241
• PCM control relay stuck open
• Open or poor ground circuit (PCM terminal 307, 308 or 332)
• Poorly connected vehicle body ground

No DTC is displayed:
Inspect the following:
• START circuit in the engine switch
• Open circuit between the engine switch and starter
|

Verify test results.
• If normal, return to the diagnostic index to service any additional symptoms. (See SYMPTOM DIAGNOSTIC INDEX [MZ-CD 1.6 (Y6)].)
• If the malfunction remains, inspect the related Service Information and perform repair or diagnosis.
